In the Saxon Leading-Edge Cluster “Cool Silicon” partners from industry, science and research have been closely working together to find solutions to a global challenge: Everyday life can no longer be imagined without smartphones and notebooks – the global demand is booming, more and more people are participating in communication. The European Commission officially named Information and Communications Technology (ICT) one of the Key Enabling Technologies. ICT is the future – from E-cars and smartphones to smart grids. But there is one pitfall: ICT requires lots of energy. “Cool Silicon” declares war on the energy guzzlers. The partners are working on energy-efficient ICT systems and the required infrastructure in order to increase the energy efficiency of ICT products significantly. The cluster’s efforts are focusing on the three areas “Micro- and Nanoelectronics”, “Communication Systems” and “Network Sensors”, each targeting the challenge from another angle.
