Each year, and alternating between the West and the East coasts, German research and funding organizations invite young German scientists and researchers, who are working in North America, for a weekend meeting on career opportunities and recent developments in higher education.

This year's Annual GAIN Meeting took place from September 2 to 4, 2011, at the Mission Bay Conference Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The weekend-long conference attracted more than 400 participants, among them 300 postdoctoral students and more than 100 heads of research organizations, high-ranking government officials as well as representatives from the higher education and private R&D sector.
