The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft for the Advancement of Science is an independent, non-profit research organization that promotes research primarily at its own research institutes.
The Max Planck Institutes perform basic research in the interest of the general public in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. In particular, the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft takes up new and innovative areas of research to supplement research carried out by German universities.
There are currently 83 Max Planck Institutes and research facilities employing a staff of approximately 17,280, including 5,654 scientists. In addition, approximately 14,860 student assistants, doctoral students, postdoctoral and research fellows and guest scientists are working at the institutes.
The Max Planck Institutes offer a variety of career opportunities for junior scientists of all nationalities: 50% of all Ph.D. students and almost 90% of all postdocs are non-German nationals.
